Renewables & sustainability internships in Asia and beyond
Carbon data, clean energy research and sustainability reports.
Overview
What the internship is about
Sustainability interns join solar developers, energy consultancies, carbon accounting firms and the ESG teams of larger companies. Typical work includes collecting electricity and fuel data from clients, building emissions inventories in Excel, comparing rooftop solar quotes and drafting sections of sustainability reports against frameworks such as GRI. Some hosts take interns on site visits to factories, solar farms or buildings being audited for energy use.
A typical week has two or three days of data work, a day of calls with suppliers or clients and some time writing. Thailand and Singapore have the most host companies, with Malaysia and Indonesia close behind.
Why do it
What you'll get out of it
Support solar and wind projects from early research to site planning and permits. You learn what decides whether a renewable project gets built: cost, location, grid access and rules.
Support projects that help businesses cut waste, energy use and emissions. You learn how companies measure their footprint and which changes save the most for what they cost.
Help with projects that protect and save water, from usage audits to community programs. You learn why water management matters more every year as the climate changes.
Your role
Collect and analyze energy data to find ways to cut energy use in buildings and industry.
Support the design and rollout of eco-friendly products and practices that reduce environmental impact.
Help track carbon, energy and waste data and prepare sustainability reports.

FAQ
Your questions, answered
What will I do on a renewables and sustainability internship?
You'll help companies cut their environmental impact or develop clean energy projects. Tasks can include collecting data, measuring carbon emissions, researching solutions and writing reports.
Do I need experience to get a renewables and sustainability internship?
No. Environmental science and engineering students are a great fit, but so are business, economics and policy students. Being comfortable with numbers helps.
What skills and tools will I use?
Mostly Excel or Google Sheets, carbon calculators and reporting tools. You'll learn how companies measure emissions and report on sustainability.
Where can I do a renewables and sustainability internship?
Popular destinations for renewables and sustainability internships include Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Taiwan. Tell us where you'd like to go and we'll check what's possible.
Can I get university credit for my internship?
Yes, if your university accepts it: we provide the documents it needs (internship agreement, placement confirmation, supervisor evaluation and a host certificate of completion). Your university decides whether to give credit, and how much.
How much does it cost, and is it paid?
Programs start from $2,050 for 6 weeks on Explorer, depending on where you go. Most internships are unpaid.
