Doing Environmental
internship with AIP

As Asia develops as a region, the environment becomes an increasing global concern. With so much focus on economic growth, consideration for the environment is often put on the sidelines. Asia is home to a multitude of biomes including tundras, forests, deserts, mountains, wetlands, grasslands, rainforest, and not to mention the diverse marine life.
An environmental internship provides more than a job, it also gives you a chance to contribute to a greater global cause. By undertaking this internship, you not only demonstrate working experience but that you take initiative as a responsible citizen of the Earth.
Not only do you undergo a fulfilling internship, but you can also experience the beautiful environments of Asia as you work to protect and conserve them.
Past AIP Environmental interns have been involved and worked on the following projects:
- Researching and developing reports for energy efficient improvements.
- Conducting analyses on overseas policy trends on energy efficiency.
- Developing a methodology to measure estimated carbon savings and environmental benefits of various projects.
- Compiling reports on mainstream technologies in international renewable energy.
- Liaising with regulatory organizations such as environmental agencies.
Note that all AIP interns are given a personal supervisor who will train, monitor and guide you throughout your international internship experience.
Internship tasks will vary from company to company, as well as intern to intern. These are only examples of tasks that were carried out from previous interns.
Depending on their internship requirements and the available internship positions in our partner companies, prospective interns may work in any of the following (or other) disciplines during their environmental internship with AIP:
Environmental Education: Environmental educators create awareness and understanding about environmental issues with the aim of triggering responsible individual and group actions. They usually focus on processes that promote problem-solving, critical thinking, and effective decision-making.
- Air Pollution Control: This environmental discipline involves the use of specific techniques in the reduction or elimination of harmful substances/pollutants introduced into the atmosphere through human activities.
- Wildlife Conservation: Wildlife conservators are tasked with protecting animal species and their habitats through the establishment and protection of public lands, promotion of responsible public practices that protect wildlife populations, and legislation such as the Endangered Species Act.
- Soil Conservation: Soil conservation has to do with preventing soil damage/loss due to erosion, and preventing low soil fertility which results from acidification, over usage, salinization, and so on.
- Environmental Health and Toxicology: This discipline is concerned with the study of the negative health effects associated with the exposure of living organisms to various physical, biological and chemical agents.
In-depth knowledge about environmental initiatives and activities is one of the major competencies required of every environmentalist. An environmental management internship in Asia will be a very good opportunity for you to update your knowledge on global environmental issues, while experiencing an international work environment.
As the field of environmental science is a very broad and progressive one, you will get to experience many roles and carry out a wide variety of tasks aimed at improving or sustaining the environment in one way or the other; you may also get to do a lot of field research, especially if your internship firm is heavily research-based.
There are several key skills/traits a young professional in the field of environmental management must absolutely develop if they want to secure lucrative jobs and get ahead in the industry. These are data-gathering skills (including logic, perseverance, and deductive reasoning skills); analytical skills (including focus, problem-solving and critical thinking skills); Research skills (including strategizing, communication, and interpersonal skills); organizational skills, and the ability to think and work independently.
During your international environmental internship with AIP, you will be in the position to develop these vital skills, and there is no doubt whatsoever that by the end of your internship in this interesting field, you would have also acquired a lot of valuable knowledge and experience which will distinguish you as a competent environmentalist and make your future career prospects much brighter.
The field of environmental science is very diverse - so much so that it contains nearly infinite possibilities for employment. Today, governments at the federal, local and state levels, as well as businesses, are beginning to invest much more towards becoming environmentally responsible, and the trend is one that shows every indication of continuing far into the future.
The growing demand for environmental specialists is further fueled by the fact that there has been a heightened public interest in the hazards facing the environment, and increasing demands are being placed on the environment as a result of rapid population growth.
So, regardless of the area you choose to specialize in as an environmentalist, the job outlook for you is excellent. For example, ecologists, microbiologists as well as soil and plant scientists are highly sought after by sanitation companies, manufacturing companies, universities, government agencies, etc.; wildlife managers, horticulturists and zoologists are constantly being employed by conservation organizations and national park services; and government agencies, as well as private companies, are always on the lookout for meteorologists and oceanographers.
The economy and the environment are interwoven in so many ways. The environment is a source of resources that drive the economy, and it also provides a most convenient sink for waste and emissions.
In many sectors of an economy, natural resources are essential inputs for production; but, on the other hand, production and consumption tend to pollute and degrade the environment in several ways. Since poor environmental quality affects economic growth and sustainability by decreasing the quality and quantity of resources and degrading health and well-being, efficient environmental management is essential if these negative impacts on the economy are to be curbed.
In general, economic growth largely depends on a healthy environment and an abundance of quality natural resources, therefore the role of environmental management in an economy is not one to be easily overlooked.
