Almaty Overview
Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city and its main business center. It was the capital until 1997, and it is still where many banks, trading companies, startups and regional offices are based. The city sits at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains, so the peaks are part of the view from almost every street.
For interns, Almaty is an easy place to start in Central Asia: tree-lined avenues, a lively café and food scene, and a pace that is busy but friendly.
Internship Opportunities in Almaty
Internships in Almaty are strongest in finance, business development, consulting, marketing, real estate and trade. Many host companies work with partners in China, Russia, Europe or the wider region, so interns often help with research, English content and international projects.
Russian and Kazakh are the languages of daily life. We look for host companies where English is used at work, and we match you on your field, your goals and your dates.
Almaty Attractions
Weekends are about the mountains. Big Almaty Lake, the Medeu ice rink and the Shymbulak ski resort are all within about an hour of the city. In town, interns explore the Green Bazaar, ride the cable car up Kok Tobe hill and spend evenings in the parks and cafés around the center.

Almaty is the business center; Astana, the capital, is home to the Astana International Financial Centre.
Day-to-day costs are low compared with most of Asia and Europe.
