Intern

As a finance intern in Bangkok, Joe assisted international investors doing business in Thailand and worked on accounting and tax filing.

The office was central, close to restaurants and public transport, and the atmosphere was friendly: “On my first day I made many new friends.” People had fun but were productive too: “They get work done, and I feel like I’m part of an awesome community.”

On AIP: “I had a dream of coming to Asia to do an internship over the summer, but I had no idea where to start. I had no connections, I knew nobody.” Through AIP he met other interns from all around the world, and “they really took the headache out of traveling halfway around the world”, so he could focus on his job and on learning.

Advice

What to know before you land

Just go for it, because in order to grow independently you have to step outside of your comfort zone. Doing an international internship, or any internship for that matter, is a big growing step. It helped me grow, and I know it’ll help you do so. Go for it, you won’t regret it.

My name is Joe. I’m from California, I go to school at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah, and I’m a finance intern at [company].

I have many responsibilities around the office. I assist international investors doing business in Thailand under the BOI, and I do accounting and tax filing.

How would I describe the culture and working environment here? I really like the office because it has a very central location. It’s accessible and close to restaurants and public transportation. The working environment here is very fun. Everybody’s always smiling and having a good time, and they’re very friendly. On my first day I made many new friends. There’s a lot of smiling and a lot of fun, but people are also productive, they get work done, and I feel like I’m part of an awesome community.

How is my time in Thailand so far? My time in Thailand has been amazing. I was able to volunteer for the Peace and Happiness Foundation in Chiang Rai, where I got to teach schoolchildren English, which was an amazing experience. I’ve also been able to go down south and see the white sandy beaches and beautiful blue water. And I’ve spent most of my time here in Bangkok, which is an amazing city, full of life, full of amazing street food, so delicious and affordable. So I love my time in Thailand.

How do I find AIP’s services? AIP has been awesome. I had a dream of coming to Asia to do an internship over the summer, but I had no idea where to start. I had no connections, I knew nobody. Now, after working with AIP, I’ve been able to meet so many new people, make new friends and meet other interns from all around the world. They really took the headache out of traveling halfway around the world to work in a new place. I didn’t have to worry about housing, or about transportation, all these things, and that made it so much easier for me to focus on my job and focus on learning.

My advice for future interns would be to just go for it, because in order to grow independently you have to step outside of your comfort zone. [unclear] Doing an international internship, or any internship for that matter, is a big growing step. It helped me grow, and I know it’ll help you do so. Go for it, you won’t regret it.
