Local know-how
What to know before you go
Non-profit and NGO work in India
Indian NGOs fund their work from a few main sources: individual donors, foreign funders and companies. Foreign donations are tightly regulated, and an NGO needs registration under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, or FCRA, to receive them, so many groups depend on money raised in India. A big source of funding inside India is corporate social responsibility (CSR). Under Section 135 of the Companies Act, larger companies must spend part of their profits on social projects, and education and health are among the areas that receive the most.
That can shape your day-to-day work. Funder reports, grant applications and project data matter a lot, so you might help with research, writing and reporting alongside field programs in areas like education and health. Our interns in India are based in Jaipur, and your tasks depend on your host organization.
