Local know-how
What to know before you go
Medical and public health in Seoul
South Korea has a single national health insurer, the National Health Insurance Service, which covers citizens living in Korea. Enrollment is compulsory, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare sets policy. That means most care follows a common system, which makes Korea a useful place to learn how health insurance and hospital administration work.
The government also supports care for patients who travel from abroad. The Korea Health Industry Development Institute works on making medical care easier for foreign patients and on growing the country's health industry. Our interns in South Korea are based in Seoul. Depending on your host, you might observe clinical teams, help with international patient paperwork, or support research and data work. As an intern you observe and support: you never treat patients or do anything that needs a license. Tell your career advisor what you study so we can look for the closest match.
