Local know-how
What to know before you go
Civil engineering in Kathmandu and Nepal
Nepal is a mountain country in an active earthquake zone, and that shapes its engineering. After the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, the government set up the National Reconstruction Authority to lead the rebuilding. The World Bank described the housing program as building back better, with technical staff checking that homes met safer standards. Buildings in Nepal follow a national building code.
Engineers are registered by the Nepal Engineering Council, which also regulates the profession. In steep terrain, civil work often means roads, bridges, water supply, buildings and hydropower. As an intern you support the team and learn from registered engineers, and you don't sign off on drawings or designs. Depending on your host, you might help with drawings, site visits, surveys, quantity lists or reports. Most of our interns in Nepal are based in Kathmandu. Tell your career advisor which part of civil engineering you prefer.
