Local know-how

What to know before you go

Agriculture in Jaipur and Rajasthan

Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan, a dry state where farmers work with limited rain. The ICAR Central Arid Zone Research Institute, based in Jodhpur, researches crops suited to arid land in the region, including pearl millet, clusterbean (guar), mustard and cumin.

Agriculture in Jaipur also has a marketing side. The National Institute of Agricultural Marketing, an autonomous institute under India's Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, trains people in how farm produce is marketed and managed. So the field here covers more than farming itself. Depending on your host, you might help with crop or market research, food processing records, farmer outreach or sustainability projects. Our interns in India are based in Jaipur. Tell your career advisor if you prefer fieldwork, research or the business side.
